- I've always thought the European style plugs are a much better design than the American. First, they are recessed. This nearly eliminates the risk of touching the prong while plugging in something. This feature alone would have saved me from the nearly hundreds of hours in the hospital at 3 years old, plastic surgery and the eventual scar on the side of my mouth as a result of an electrical burn.
Second, the circle shape is much safer than the slotted. You can't get knives or forks or other things that are commonly inserted in the American plugs by kids. It seems there are much fewer things that can be put into the small holes of these plugs.
Finally, the plugs lock into the outlets and are not easily pulled out. This avoids the frustration and bent plugs that are common with pulling a vaccuum around the house.
The part that “electrifies” is also further recessed in the back, so even if a child succeeds in sticking something in there, it would have to be stuck in pretty far for anything to happen. This is why you can’t find those plastic baby proofing plug thingies for Euro-plugs. You don’t need them.
For some reason I had never asked how you got the scar on your mouth. What an interesting story, but horrible experience.
