- Part of Lenny's Market is a Ukrainian/Russian store. It is only a couple blocks from our house and is as authentic as can be--complete with a babushka that hands out candy to the kids. The babushka serving us today was originally from Baku, but was born in Ukraine. We chatted a while and eventually gave in to buying some nice Ukrainian swiss cheese and a hunk of kalbasa (sausage) for sandwiches. It was a bit of Ukrainian "comfort" food that helped ease the longing to be back in Ukraine again.
It makes me laugh that it says Ukrainian Food Store, and then the Cyrillic is “Russian Store” Hmmmm.
I know. Almost like it’s cooler to say “Ukrainian” in English rather than “Russian.” Or rather it’s not as cool to say “Ukrainian” in Cyrillic.
